Car Bio

I am a Ford Skilled trades employee at the AutoAlliance Flat Rock assembly plant and have been there for 21+ years. We have made a number of different vehicles for Ford and Mazda during this time, but in 2004 we finally got the word that we were going to build the next generation Mustang for Ford Motor Company. During the early stages of the development of the “new” Mustang, I was instantly drawn to it for the simple fact that its looks were almost like the late 1960’s early 1970’s Mustangs. I had owned 4 Mustangs in the past, from the base 6 “banger” to a 1968 GT 350. In November of 2004, while my partner and I were driving around in our work truck on the afternoon shift, we just happened to go into the lot where a bunch of new Mustangs were waiting to be shipped. I told him to stop, I want to check one out close up. I ended up taking a screaming yellow GT for a quick, and I mean “quick” test drive. I was so impressed with this vehicle that when I got back into the truck my partner thought I had a shot of steroids because I told him “I gotta get me one of these”!!

So, the next week saw me at Friendly Ford of Monroe, MI. ordering my Mineral Gray 2005 Mustang GT with dark charcoal interior, interior up-grade package, standard Bullitt wheels, active theft system and Shaker 500. I got to watch it being built in December of 2004 and it was delivered to Friendly Ford on the 23rd of December; too late to get it for Christmas because of the paper work and new vehicle prep. I took delivery of it on January 3rd, 2005. That was the only time it has been driven in the snow. When Spring came around and I got it on the road for the first time the car did nothing but amaze me every time I drove it. On one occasion though, while driving home one foggy night, I was coming up to a traffic signal in the left lane and a F-150 was in the right lane. Well, the light turned green just as I rolled up to it and I started moving out. The F-150, I thought, wanted to race with me. Now, visibility was only 1/4 mile and we were doing about 25-30 mph and the F-150 would seem to jump ahead and then I would. When I finally got the urge to floor it I did at the same time the F-150 did. I thought I had a quick car, but let me tell you that truck shot down the road so quick I thought I had a four banger. He did slow down enough to let me get near his rear and I noticed that his F-150 was a “SVT” F-150! Wow, my first street race against a “truck” and he blew my doors off. Reminder to self: “Self, stay away from the ones that have that SVT badge”.

After 3 years of driving my GT, I still get a kick out of it every time I get behind the wheel. Summer of 2008 I drove it cross country and back putting on over 8,000, trouble free miles. It had an average of 25.2 mpg for the trip; worst being 21 mpg but the best, and it happened 3 times was 29.5 mpg. Believe it or not, I took pictures of the dash each time because I knew no one would believe it. This is by far the finest Mustang I have ever owned. The 2010 models are now being built and they will be even more exciting; trust me, I have already driven one of those as well!
