Tools Required

  • 12mm open end wrench
  • 13mm socket

  • 3/8 inch or ½ inch drive ratchet
  • Jack stands
  • Floor jack
  • Needle nose pliers
Installation Time: (approx) 2 Hours

Installation

Notes:
  • Having a lift to get the car up in the air makes it a little easier, but it is perfectly do-able in a home garage as long as a good set of jack stands and a good floor jack are used.
  • Make sure the brake components are cool enough before starting work on them.
  • This kit is intended for use on 2010-2012 Mustangs, but can be adapted to fit most other applications, such as the 2005 Mustang that is shown in this guide. The process is the same for all, except for what the inlet end of the ducting attaches to.
Removal of stock parts:
  1. Start by removing the front wheels and jacking the car up, making sure the car is safely supported on jack stands. This can be done one wheel at a time or both simultaneously.
  2. With the wheel(s) removed, the first step is the removal of the old dust shield. (Figure 1)

  4. To remove the old dust shield, the brake caliper, caliper mounting bracket, and brake rotor must be removed from the front suspension assembly. Now would be a convenient time to replace the brake pads. If doing so, refer to the next step. If are not replacing the brake pads, skip step 4 and move ahead to step 5.
  5. Remove the (2) 13mm bolts holding the caliper to the caliper mounting bracket. One is pictured; the other is in the same position higher up on the back of the caliper. The caliper can now be pulled off and the pads changed. Be sure to support the removed caliper so it does not put excess stress on the rubber brake line. (Figure 2)

  7. If you skipped step 4, the caliper and mounting bracket can be removed as one unit. To do so, simply remove the (2) 15mm bolts holding the mounting bracket to the steering knuckle. Be sure to support the removed caliper/bracket so it does not put excess stress on the rubber brake line. (Figure 2)
  8. With the caliper and mounting bracket off, the brake rotor can be pulled off the hub. Remove the (2) sheet metal washers holding the rotor to the hub by spinning them off. You can use a pair of needle nose pliers or a flathead screwdriver to do this. Now pull off the rotor.
  9. With the rotor removed, it is time to remove the dust shield itself. Using a 12mm wrench, remove the (3) bolts holding the dust shield to the steering knuckle and pull off the shield. (Figure 3)
Installation of Ford Racing BOSS 302 Brake Duct Kit:
  1. Installation of the cooling duct kit is the reverse of disassembly.
  2. Take the new shield and use the supplied 12mm bolts to attach it to the steering knuckle. (Figure 3)
  3. Ford Racing Boss 302 Brake Cooling Duct Kit - 03
  4. Reassemble the brake components in the reverse order to which they were disassembled.
    1. Install rotor with the washers to hold it to the hub.
    2. Install the caliper bracket to steering knuckle using the 15mm bolts
    3. Install the caliper to bracket (if removed to change brake pads) using the 13mm bolts
  5. With the brake components reassembled, the orange ducting can be attached to the new shield. It may be necessary to make a small slit in the end of the hose if it does not slide over the opening on the shield.
  6. Use a Phillips head or flathead screwdriver to tighten the supplied hose clamps around the hose. (Figure 4)
  7. The final step is to attach the inlet end of the ducting to some source of air in the front of the car.
    1. Installing on a 2010-2012 Mustang with the Boss 302 or California Special lower front fascia, the hose will clamp directly to the back of the opening molded into the fascia. Note: It is necessary to remove the fog lamps if so equipped, to utilize this opening.
    2. This kit can be used on nearly all other Mustang applications if a custom inlet setup is used. That was done on the car in this install guide, which is a 2005 GT. A universal brake cooling duct inlet was used, an opening was made in the lower grille insert and then the hose clamped right on. (Figure 5)
    3. It may be necessary to trim the hose slightly to the right length depending on the application.

  9. The supplied zip-ties may be used to attach the ducting to the sway bar for added security. (Figure 6)
